Prizes up to $2,500 awarded to full-time college, university, or high school students age 25 or younger. Selection is based upon demonstrated ability, potential for development as a writer, and appreciation of classical liberal principles evidenced in submitted publications. Deadline: December 1.

Eric Breindel College and University Journalism Award

Given to undergraduate student whose work work best reflects "Love of country and its democratic institutions as well as the act of bearing witness to the evils of totalitarianism." Winner gets $10,000, paid internship at either Fox News Channel or the New York Post and residential housing in New York City. Deadline: April 27

McGrady/Allard Science Journalism Travel Grant

The Council for the Advancement of Science Writing occasionally makes funds available to aspiring science journalists (including those in graduate science writing programs) to help underwrite the costs of travel to other major science meetings. Deadline: varies.

Mark of Excellence Awards

Annual contest by Society of Professional Journalists honors best collegiate journalism in 39 categories for print, radio, television, and online media. Regional and national awards given. Deadline: January 23.

Vada and Colonel Barney Oldfield National Security Reporting Fellowship

$1,000 award for electronic journalists with 10 years of less experience recognizes excellence in coverage of national defense and security issues by a reporter or producer. Deadline: May 12.

College Photographer of the Year

The annual contest "recognizes outstanding work of students currently working toward a degree." The winner receives the $1,000 Col. William Lookadoo award, the $500 Milton Freier award and a paid 14-week internship with National Geographic magazine. Deadline: October 1.

The David W. Miller Award for Student Journalists

$2,500 award given annually to undergraduates who published journalistic articles in a campus publication on a topic of intellectual interest. Examples include a new trend, discovery, or theory; an important scholarly debate; an issue with both scholarly and public-policy implications; or a researcher who is as interesting as his or her scholarship. Deadline: June 1.

Rolling Stone's Annual College Journalism Competition

$2,500 awards given annually to college students in various categories: Entertainment Reporting (reporting on popular music, film or television, including artist profiles and interviews), Feature Writing (stylishly written narratives and profiles that illuminate issues and trends), and Essays and Criticism (commentary, including expressions of opinion and humor, on any subject). The editors of Rolling Stone judge the entries. Deadline: June 15.

The Livingston Awards for Young Journalists

$10,000 prize given to print, broadcast and online journalists ages 35 and younger for local, national and international reporting. Deadline: February 1.

Peter R. Weitz Prize

$5,000 prize for journalists ages 35 and younger who are covering European issues for U.S. newspapers and magazines, whether they are correspondents based in Europe or cover Europe from the United States. Deadline: February 28.

Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards

Known as the "Poor People's Pulitzers" within the press arena, these prizes are awarded to high school, college, professional and international journalists in the categories of print, radio, TV, photography and editorial cartoons. They honor "the outstanding reporting of the lives and strife of disadvantaged people throughout the world." Deadline: January 30.

The Evert Clark/Seth Payne Award For Young Science Journalists

Award given to journalists ages 30 and under who have pulished articles on any field of science (biology, health, math, computers, science policy, etc.). Winner receives $1,000 and expenses to attend the annual meeting of the National Association of Science Writers and the New Horizons briefing of the Concil for the Advancement of Science Writing. Deadline: June 30.

David S. Barr Awards

$500 prize for a high school entrant and a $1,500 prize for the college winner in recognition of "reporting that promotes issues of importance to working people and that contributes to the pursuit of justice and fairness." Deadline: last Friday of January.

Robert Novak Collegiate Journalism Award

College journalists can win up to $5,000 and trip to Washington, D.C., for stories they published for a school publication or website. Deadline: April 15.

U.K. Student Media Awards

University students in the United Kingdom can enter a variety of categories: Reporter of the year, writer of the year, photographer of the year, broadcast journalist of the year, digital journalist of the year or publication of the year. Winners will receive internships at the Guardian or a blogging stint at popular music magazine NME. Deadline: July.

Scottish Student Press Awards

University students in Scotland can apply for the annual Scottish Student Press Awards. Awards given in several categories, including news writing, feature writing, sports writing, multimedia, photography and others. The grand prize winner, the Student Journalist of the Year, will receive a four-week internship at the Scotland Herald during the summer of 2010 and a cash prize of £500. Deadline: April.

Charles M. Schulz Award for College Cartoonist

Open to any undergraduate student cartoonist whose cartoons were published in print or online by a college newspaper or college magazine in the U.S. or its territories. Winner receives trophy and $10,000. Deadline: January 30.

Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition

Awards nine aspiring journalists a 10-day guided study tour to Japan. Deadline: February.

"Write into Gear" automotive journalism competition

Annual competition for aspiring automotive journalists is open to any United Kingdom resident who is 18+ years old. Top winner gets 3-month paid summer internship at Auto Express magazine. Deadline: February.

AAEC/John Locher Memorial Award

Annual award recognizes best editorial cartoonist in college. Open to undergraduate student cartoonists from the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Winner receives a personalized plaque and an expense-paid trip to the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists convention. Deadline: March 15.
